Man arrested after lorry driver dies in M5 crash

Written by on 13 September 2020

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a lorry driver died in a collision on the M5.

Gloucestershire Police were called to reports of a Ford Fiesta losing control on the M5 northbound carriageway at 5.20am on Sunday.

A lorry had stopped to protect the Fiesta from passing vehicles and to check on the welfare of its driver when a second lorry collided with the first lorry, a force spokeswoman said.

A 37-year-old man from Bristol who was driving the second lorry died at the scene.

The driver of the Ford Fiesta, a 21-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and on suspicion of driving under the influence of drink and/or drugs.

He has since been released under investigation.

Gloucestershire Police said officers investigating the crash wanted to hear from anyone who may have dashcam footage of the incident or witnessed what happened.

Following the incident, the M5 was shut both ways between junctions 9 and 11.
