England’s tiered system of coronavirus restrictions now has a fourth level, essentially replicating the rules of November’s full lockdown.
Millions of people who were in Tier 3 areas across London and much of the South East have moved into Tier 4, closing shops, gyms and personal care services.
England’s three-tier system had been in place since 2 December, and Tier 4 came into force on Sunday.
Number 10’s COVID Taskforce says 16.4 million people (31% of England’s population) are now living under Tier 4 rules, with 19.7 million (37%) in Tier 3, 16.1 million (30%) in Tier 2, and just 856,000 (2%) in Tier 1.

Wales’ own “alert level four” measures – which are also a full lockdown in all but name – were due on 28 December, but have also been brought forward to 20 December.
Scotland will enter its Level 4 rules from Boxing Day, when Northern Ireland will begin a six-week lockdown.
