MP arrested and charged over ‘reckless conduct’ after alleged COVID rule breach

Written by on 4 January 2021

An MP has been arrested and charged with “reckless conduct” after an alleged breach of coronavirus rules.

Margaret Ferrier, 60, was suspended from the Scottish National Party parliamentary group back in September.

That was for travelling from Glasgow to Westminster despite having experienced COVID-19 symptoms while waiting for a test result – and then making a return journey a few days later after being informed it was positive.

The Metropolitan Police conducted an investigation and said it would take no further action, but referred the case to Police Scotland.

On Monday, Police Scotland confirmed a 60-year-old woman, understood to be Ferrier, was arrested and charged in connection with alleged culpable and reckless conduct.

A spokeswoman for the force said: “We can confirm that officers today arrested and charged a 60-year-old woman in connection with alleged culpable and reckless conduct.

“This follows a thorough investigation by Police Scotland into an alleged breach of coronavirus regulations between 26 and 29 September 2020.

“A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal and we are unable to comment further.”

An SNP spokesperson said: “Ms Ferrier remains suspended from the SNP and we will not comment further on live police proceedings.”
