COVID-19: UK reports one further coronavirus death as 50 million vaccine jabs now delivered

Written by on 4 May 2021

The UK has reported one COVID death in its daily figures, while more than 50 million vaccine doses have now been delivered.

The last time coronavirus-related deaths increased by one was on 30 August.

The UK has now administered 34,588,600 first vaccine doses and 15,500,949 second doses – a total of 50,089,549.

Some 1,649 COVID cases were recorded in the latest 24-hour period.

It compares to 2,064 cases and six deaths recorded last Monday (26 April).

The prime minister has said there is a “good chance” the one-metre rule for social distancing can be ditched next month.

The final decision on whether the change can be brought in from 21 June will depend on the data, Boris Johnson said but he added, “That’s what it feels like to me right now.”

He also said that the next stage on the roadmap out of lockdown on 17 May – which covers indoor hospitality, entertainment and possibly foreign travel – is “going to be good”.

Meanwhile, an industry chief has said a return to unrestricted trading for hospitality from 21 June is “critical” and will mean firms can “come off life support”.

The comments from Kate Nicholls, chief executive of trade body UKHospitality, came as The Times reported social distancing rules will be lifted to allow pubs, restaurants and theatres to open to full capacity for the first time in more than a year.

One-way systems, screens and mask-wearing while moving around might remain for hospitality venues but customer numbers will no longer be limited, the newspaper said.

Audiences in theatres and cinemas will have to wear face coverings during performances, while there will be strict guidance on ventilation and staggered entry, The Times said.

But Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said “some safeguards” may stay in place when legal restrictions end, such as continued use of masks and physical distancing.
