Oxford Circus stabbing: Man charged with murder after 60-year-old fatally wounded

A man has appeared in court charged with murder after a 60-year-old was fatally stabbed in Oxford Circus, London on Thursday evening.

Tedi Fanta Hagos, 25, of no fixed address, is charged with the murder of Stephen Dempsey outside a Microsoft store in Oxford Circus.

He is also charged with possession of a knife.

Appearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, Fanta – who previously lived in Swansea – wore a grey tracksuit and was assisted by an interpreter during the hearing.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on Tuesday.

Police were called just after 8pm on Thursday to reports of a man being stabbed at Oxford Circus, close to the junction with Regent Street.

Officers as well as the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended where the victim was found with stab injuries.

He was taken to hospital, where he later died.

The Met said his next of kin has been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

A post-mortem will take place in due course.

People with mobile phone footage of the attack or those who witnessed the assault are urged to contact the police and owners of any passing cars with dashcams are encouraged to check whether they have recorded it.
