Officials at Newcastle Borough Council have signed the Dying to Work
Charter, a pledge to support employees who become terminally ill at work.
The charter, part of a campaign by the TUC has also been adopted by some of the major employers in the UK, including Rolls Royce, Royal Mail and the Co-op.
It aims to provide greater security for terminally ill workers and means they can’t be dismissed or forced out of their job as a result of their condition.
If someone with a terminal illness loses their job, they lose their income. But, they can also lose any ‘death in service’ payments, earned through a lifetime of employment but only paid to those still in employment.
