01.11.21 – Pumpkin Recycling, Trading Standards Operation, Poppy Sales, Collision in Kingsley

Written by on 31 October 2021

If you’ve been celebrating Halloween, you may be wondering what to do with your pumpkin now you have finished with it. Well, you can put it out for the wildlife.  it will be appreciated by the birds, foxes and squirrels, but pumpkin is dangerous for hedgehogs, so make sure that you put your pumpkin somewhere off the ground so that the hedgehogs can’t get it.  Or, put it in your food recycling bin for collection.  Here are a few facts from Newcastle Borough Council waste and recycling service – four recycled pumpkins could generate enough power for a shower for 10 minutes, one recycled pumpkin could generate enough energy to power a TV for three hours or enough energy to power a hairdryer for 13 minutes.  So whatever you choose to do with yours, it can make a big difference.

Three shops in Stoke-on-Trent are being investigated after selling alcohol and tobacco to underaged girls as part of a trading standards operation.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council teams organised a day of test purchases at premises across the city last week). They carried out daytime visits to a total of 12 shops. Nine of the premises correctly refused sales, but two underage volunteers – a 14-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl – were able to buy alcohol from two premises and tobacco from a third, without being asked for identification. The shops in Fenton, Stoke and Tunstall have been notified and are now being investigated by trading standards officers.
