19.04.22 – ‘Carbon Bubble’ in Stafford, SFRS Home Safety Heroes

Written by on 19 April 2022

A large bright orange ‘carbon bubble’ is popping up in Stafford town centre on Friday (April 22) as part of the international Earth Day 2022 celebrations.

The 10ft bubble installation aims to help people to visualise how their daily activities can impact carbon emissions and make them think about how to reduce their carbon footprint.

The giant bubble has previously been showcased in London’s Trafalgar Square. This is the first time that this eye-catching bubble has come

to the Midlands.

Staffordshire County Council has pledged to be net zero by 2050. It has already made strides, cutting its carbon emissions by 25 per cent through initiatives such as switching to run buildings on green energy and replacing streetlights with LED bulbs.

In addition, schools and businesses have been encouraged to increase walking and cycling as greener transport methods and also thousands of trees have been planted on business development sites and green spaces.

To help educate people about carbon reduction and climate change, Staffordshire University is running a free online lecture on Friday starting at midday.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is calling on the children of Staffordshire to give their best safety advice through a short film.

The Fire service has launched a competition for school children to become ‘home safety heroes’ and share advice with Staffordshire residents who are living alone who are nearly four times more likely to die or be seriously injured in a fire.

The competition is open to enthusiastic school classes, after school clubs, or groups like Brownies and Beavers to use their imaginative ideas to help someone to change their behaviour towards fire prevention.  The closing date to submit your video is  Friday 27th May.

Not only will the winning content be shared on an episode of the virtual Safe+Sound education programme, but the lucky group will also win an exclusive tour of a fire station and have the chance to meet their local firefighters.

Full details of the competition, as well as the terms and conditions, can be found on the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service website:

If you think your group has what it takes to be Safety Stars, please send a link for your video (please use WeTransfer to generate a link and email this link), along with your names and age category, to by
