What a delightful treat – a timeless classic
‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ is on the road and this week it stops by in Hanley’s Regent Theatre. A packed theatre fully appreciated the charming and magical interpretation of a timeless classic loved by adults and children alike.
The story of the eccentric yet vulnerable character of Caractacus Potts, father of two children who meets the beautiful Truly Scrumptious (played by Ellie Nunn) was beautifully played by the talented Adam Garcia who portrayed the sensitivity and vulnerability of a struggling single parent whilst also showing the eccentricity and comedic side of the character. Grandpa Potts was played by Liam Fox (probably best known for his character Dan in Emmerdale) who was very funny.
Two very talented young actors played the children, Melody Caruana played Jemima Potts, Melody is a very accomplished young actor who has appeared in a number of productions. Jeremy Potts played by Huxley Syers made his debut – I’m sure he has a great future ahead of him.
The show had everything in it that the film contained, humour, moving moments, great songs and dance routines. The old bamboo dance scene was amazing and Adam Garcia did not put a foot wrong. The Bavarian spies played by Adam Stafford (Boris) and Michael Joseph (Goran) were hilariously funny if at times a little hard to understand what they were actually saying.

Every story has a villain and this show has an abundance of them with the spies and of course Baron Bomburst and Baroness Bomburst who were very funny and at times a little cheeky. The dastardly Child catcher played by the UKs top drag artiste The Vivienne was very menacing and scary.

Of course, the real star of the show is Chitty herself. The car that actually flies onstage it was amazing rising into the air twisting and turning ….. truly magical. The whole audience were on its feet for a well-deserved standing ovation at the end of the show. Highly Recommended show running until Sunday 27th October 2024.
