Rising cases of ‘quad-demic’ viruses prompt NHS vaccination call

Written by on 24 January 2025

The NHS in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent is calling on residents to take up the offer of vaccinations against COVID-19, flu, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) as cases of these serious illnesses continue to rise this winter.

Health experts are warning of the impact of the ‘quad-demic’ of COVID-19, flu, RSV, and norovirus, with an increasing number of patients requiring urgent medical care for severe symptoms. Vaccinations remain the most effective way to protect against serious illness and ease pressure on local healthcare services.

Dr Paul Edmondson-Jones, Chief Medical Officer for the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care Board, emphasised the life-saving role of vaccines:

“Vaccination is our best defence against the viruses that circulate each winter. This year, we’re facing a combination of illnesses that are causing more people to become seriously unwell. By getting vaccinated, you’re not only protecting yourself but also helping to reduce the spread of these viruses in our communities.”

Who can get vaccinated?

Residents are encouraged to check their eligibility and book their vaccination appointments as soon as possible:

  • COVID-19 vaccine: Available to eligible groups, including those aged 65 and over, carers, and people with long-term health conditions until 31st January.
  • Flu vaccine: Recommended for children aged 2-3, school-aged children, pregnant women, and adults over 50.
  • RSV vaccine: Offered to eligible older adults, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems.

How to book your vaccination

Vaccines are free for those who are eligible and available at GP surgeries, pharmacies, and pop-up clinics across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. To book:

  • Visit the NHS website or call your GP.
  • Many local pharmacies offer walk-in appointments for flu and COVID-19 vaccines.

Dr Edmondson-Jones added:

“Every vaccination reduces the risk of severe illness and hospital admission. By getting vaccinated, you’re making a choice to protect yourself, your family, and the NHS this winter.”

Stay safe this winter

In addition to vaccination, the NHS encourages everyone to maintain good hygiene practices, stay home if feeling unwell, and contact NHS 111 for advice before visiting emergency departments.
