Newcastle Borough Council – Recyclable Additions

Written by on 3 June 2025

Newcastle Borough Council have extended the list of things we can recycle.  Previously, things like plastic bags and soft plastic packaging were not acceptable in the blue bin, they had to go into the general waste bin.

Since this changed in Newcastle at the beginning of April , speaking personally, my recycling bin now gets much more full than my general waste bin.  So, here is a run down of thing you can now put in your blue bin – put them in loose don’t bag them up …

  • food and drink cartons, such as Tetra Pak
  • all plastic bags and liners (so things like carrier bags and bags for bread, cereals, fruit, vegetables, salad, cut flowers, frozen, chilled and dried food)
  • wrappers from chocolates, sweets, biscuits, cakes, ice creams, lollipops and chewing gum packets
  • foil-lined crisp, snack or coffee bags
  • multipack outer bags and wrappers
  • microwave or ready meal pouches
  • cheese, fish and meat wrappers
  • baby food, pet food, detergent and cleaning pouches, bags and sachets
  • toilet roll and kitchen roll wrappers
  • toiletry refill pouches, packets and sachets
  • removeable plastic film lids
  • magazine and newspaper wrappers
  • plastic sleeves from bottles and jars
  • bubble wrap and cling film
  • the net bags that some fruit and vegetables come in

All of those had to go into general waste before – or you could gather them up and put them in special containers at the recycling centre or outside some shops.

There are still a few things that have to go to general waste – Please put these items into your household rubbish bin:

  • blister packs and packaging that tablets come in
  • garden compost bags
  • balloons
  • disposable gloves or masks
  • foam or polystyrene of any kind (including soft flexible foam)
  • plastic straws, cups, knives, forks and spoons
  • takeaway drinks cups (hot or cold)

So, still a few things that can’t be recycled but the list of recyclable items is certainly growing in Newcastle Borough – I do stress again that this is in Newcastle and not in Stoke – it is carry on as you have always done if you live in Stoke and hopefully Stoke Council will also get this in place pretty quickly.

And a mention for our recycling centres – there are many different centres around Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent.  Newcastle Recycling Centre is at Leycett – the post code is ST5 6AD.  There are skips for so many different things – they collect batteries, ink cartridges, gas bottles, electricals and electronic equipment, carpets, fluorescent tubes – and many other things – have a look at the website.

This will become a legal requirement for every council some time in 2027  so Newcastle council are streets ahead on this which is good to know.
