CRY – Cardiac Risk in the Young in memory of Dan Hughes … 2025 marked 10 years since Dan’s death and the Hughes family, wanted to make it the year in which more hearts were screened through his memorial fund than in any of the previous years. And they achieved that by hosting 14 screening days at 7 different locations – they joined up with Newcastle college to stage 2 screening days in February where 226 of their students were screened with 7 being referred on for further testing or investigation.
They held their annual screening weekend in the parish at Sir Thomas Boughey Academy in September. Over that weekend 191 young people were screened with 10 being referred for further investigation. In total in 2025 … 1,423 young people were screened with 69 of those being referred. Frightening figures
Of course it could be said that it shouldn’t be necessary for a charity to have to do this screening … so there is a petition that you can sign .. Fund cardiac screening at age 14 years and cardiac awareness programme … They need to get to 100,000 signatures for it to be discussed in parliament … if you go to that government petition website it is number 750999 … or have a look at the Hitmix facebook page and website today for the link … but do sign it … we have mammogram programs we have cervical screening programs which save many lives , so why not heart screening for young people – when 12 young people die every week in the UK alone from undiagnosed heart defects …
