FLAGS TO FLY PROUDLY AS BOROUGH COMES TOGETHER FOR PATRIOTIC SUMMER CELEBRATION
Families from across Newcastle-under-Lyme are being invited to come together for a proud celebration of community, country and national identity this summer.
Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council is hosting a special community event in the award-winning Queens Gardens on Saturday 25 July, where the Union Flag and the Cross of St George will be raised at midday.
The flag-raising ceremony is at the heart of an uplifting civic occasion celebrating the pride residents share in Newcastle-under-Lyme, England and the United Kingdom.
The event comes during a summer of major sporting occasions, including Wimbledon, international cricket, cycling and football, which have once again shown the unique power of sport in bringing communities and the country together.
Stafford Brigades Youth Band will add to the patriotic atmosphere by performing a selection of traditional favourites, including the national anthem, “God Save the King”.
Residents will also be able to purchase food and refreshments from businesses in the Ironmarket before and after the ceremony.
Cllr. Graham Shaw, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “Having been born and brought up in Newcastle-under-Lyme, I am immensely proud of our borough, its history and the strong sense of community that has always defined our area.
“The Union Flag and the Cross of St George should unite us. They belong to all of us, regardless of our background, and represent the shared history, values and freedoms that bind our communities together.
“This event is about celebrating everything we have in common. We are one borough, one community and part of one proud United Kingdom. Our flags represent generations who have served our country, the freedoms we enjoy today and the common identity we pass on to our children. We should fly them proudly and celebrate the place and country we are fortunate to call home.”
The celebration takes place from 11.30am until 12.30pm and will be attended by the Mayor of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Cllr. Christopher Bailey, alongside representatives from the Tri Service and Veterans Support Centre.
Residents of all ages are warmly encouraged to attend, enjoy the music and atmosphere, and take part in a proud civic occasion celebrating Newcastle-under-Lyme’s community spirit and our shared pride in England and the United Kingdom.
