The Nutcracker – A Christmas Fairytale

Theatre – Adapted and Directed by Theresa Heskins

To 27th January

We look forward to it every year – it is the official start of Christmas – and once again the New Vic’s Christmas play was a complete triumph – it couldn’t have been more Christmassy!

A beautiful story set in the ‘Kingdom of Sweets’ at the top of a Christmas tree, told by amazing cast clad in exceptional, intricate costumes with a fabulous festive setting.   We walked into the theatre and a beautiful Christmas tree took centre stage, and it turned out to be a masterpiece in itself.

Credit to James Atherton for the musical adaption and direction – music is so important to the overall feel of any production, and this was faultless.  With beautiful music from a wide range of instruments throughout taking us through different emotions as the play progressed, and the musicians themselves were placed on a balcony above the stage – a beautiful visible mini-orchestra pit.

A talented cast took us through from start to finish – many new faces at the New Vic interlinked with the old favourites that we recognise from previous performances.  One lady caught my eye – I couldn’t recall her from past New Vic performances, and even wondered if I knew her she was so familiar.  It was the stunning Kate Spencer who has recently been in Coronation Street.

The Nutcracker …  an enchanting Christmas Fairytale with just the right amount of beautiful ballet interlinked with seamless acting and delivery from a wonderful cast who were obviously enjoying it as much as we were.

This is a captivating FIVE STAR PERFORMANCE and a must see for children everywhere … but then again …. you don’t need to be a child to enjoy this mesmerizing Christmas performance … because no matter what your age it will take you way, way back in time … and make you feel like a child at Christmas again!!
