Solar Panel Plans in NUL, Fire at Recycling Centre

Written by on 15 July 2024

Plans for installing clean energy-generating solar panels on council land in Newcastle-under-Lyme are a step closer.  The Borough Council’s Cabinet is being asked to approve the solar scheme and to develop a planning application.  The proposed 8.9 hectare site neighbours Keele Cemetery, on the north side of the A525.  The area earmarked for solar panels is one day expected to be incorporated into the cemetery and used for burials – but not during the 25-year lifespan of the project, while another part of the field in shade will be used for the planting of memorial trees.

Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council intends saving taxpayers’ money at the same time as reducing carbon use by focusing on some of its largest users of energy, such as Jubilee2, Brampton Museum, the crematorium and the works depot.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Crews attended a recycling centre in Burslem shortly before 11am on Wednesday following reports of a fire .  Six crews were used to bring the fire under control. And No one has been reported injured at this time.

A full inspection into the cause is underway, but it is believed it may have been caused accidentally by a lithium-ion battery.

Group Manager James Green, said: “While an investigation into the cause of the fire is being carried out, I want to advise people that disposing of batteries inappropriately can not only cause damage to the environment but also increases the risk of fires occurring.  We would urge local businesses and households to ensure that batteries are separated from general waste and disposed of appropriately via one of the many battery recycling schemes in operation.
