Fire at Walley’s Quarry, Staffordshire HAF Programme

Written by on 5 August 2024

As we reported yesterday, a number of crews from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue attended a fire a Walleys Quarry in Silverdale on Sunday night.  Crews worked tirelessly throughout the night to bring the fire under control and to minimise the impact on the local community.  The main seats of the fire have been contained and two fire engines remain at the scene as crews continue damping down and dealing with hotpots.   Station Manager Duncan Cole said: “Crews are continuing to work alongside site staff who are using diggers to lift sections of the waste, allowing firefighters to damp down remaining hot spots.  We expect to be here for a few days yet to ensure all hot spots are fully extinguished so that the fire does not reignite.”

At the height of the incident there were six fire engines, a water carrier and a high volume pump being used to tackle the fire. Investigators attended the site yesterday to look into the cause of the fire.

Local residents are reminded to take precautions, to keep windows closed and avoid the area where possible.
