Ladies Day – New Vic Theatre

Written by on 8 February 2023

Last night I went to the New Vic Theatre to watch ‘Ladies Day’.  It is a lovely, easy to watch and easy to follow, play around the lives of four women Jan, Linda, Shelley and Pearl.  Like most groups of friends they are all very different and we pick up bits about each of their lives as the play progresses.  They all work in a fish factory by day, and because Pearl is retiring they decide to go for a day at the races, as the title ‘Ladies Day’ suggests.  You see the ‘love-hate bond’ between them all and there are some very funny moments.  There is some great acting by all of the ladies, and whilst there are quite a few men characters in the play, 6 to be precise, they are all played by Gareth Cassidy.  If you are a regular theatre goer you will recognise Gareth – he was in Nello’s play Marvellous recently he was also in the 39 steps, the prince and the pauper and a few more.   Gareth is a master of different voices and accents and he also has a very expressive face – he’s very funny. Also, it was lovely to see Glennis and Jason there who won the tickets last week in I-Spy.  Although they love the theatre they hadn’t been to the New Vic before, which is very different as it’s theatre in the round.  They both loved it and I could see them from where I was sitting and they were howling with laughter which was lovely to see.  So .. Ladies Day is on until Saturday 25th February, and it is definitely worth a watch – it is lovely to sit there leave the cares of the world behind and have a good old laugh, and also know that you are supporting this lovely charitable institution which we are lucky to have right here in Newcastle.  You can find more information the New Vic Theatre website.
