28.07.23 – Faye raises over £2K in Head-shave, More Newcastle in Bloom Judging

Written by on 27 July 2023

A trustee who has Cerebral Palsy has raised over £2,000 for a charity based in Newcastle-under-Lyme by having her head shaved.

36 year old Faye Johnson, from Talke Pits, took on her ‘Fund-Shaving Challenge’ last Saturday (22nd July) to raise vital funds for Our Space (Staffs) Ltd, a charity that supports children, young people and adults with disabilities and their families.

After having set an initial target of £500, Faye is thrilled to have raised four times that amount, and she said  “I am overwhelmed by the generosity that everyone has shown me, especially during the current cost-of-living crisis.”

“An hour before the head shave I felt really nervous! I am shocked at how much I like my new look. Everyone has been very complimentary about it.”

Jane Smith, Head of Charity at Our Space, added: “It is an amazing thing that Faye has done.  “The money raised will help us to continue providing much-needed services to our members and their families.”

If, like Faye,  you would like to support Our Space with your own fundraising event, email office@ourspacestaffs.org.uk for details on how to do this.

Newcastle has blossomed again for the national final of the Royal Horticultural Society Britain in Bloom judging yesterday.

As well as seeing traditional set-piece floral displays, judges visited projects undertaken by community groups and volunteers.

The inspection to determine the national winner of the small city category, follows last week’s judging for the regional, Heart of England small city category.

Starting at the Brampton, judges toured parts of Bradwell, Knutton, Silverdale, past Keele and then round to south-west Newcastle before returning to the town centre.

The Borough is one of four shortlisted to contest this year’s RHS Britain in Bloom ‘small city’ category, competing against Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent, Derry in Northern Ireland and the Borough of Oadby and Wigston in Leicestershire.
