Vulnerability and Housing Team Award Nomination, ‘New Era’ Domestic Abuse partnership

Written by on 1 March 2024

People helping the homeless and vulnerable in Newcastle-under-Lyme have been shortlisted for a national award.  The Borough Council’s ‘vulnerability and housing team’ is on the final list for the small team of the year award in a competition organised by the Local Government Chronicle (LGC).

Staff, based at Castle House, work one-to-one with vulnerable residents and resolve problems with other agencies where needed.  Gill Heesom, Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Community Safety and Wellbeing, said: “Staff do excellent work for the community, far from the spotlight, so I’m delighted they have been shortlisted for this award.  By identifying the issues and working through the obstacles we have had some real successes which has enabled people to get on with living safer, healthier lives.”

Over £16 million has been invested over a five-year period up to September 2023 into services to address domestic abuse under a partnership approach led by the Staffordshire Commissioner’s Office in conjunction with Staffordshire County Council and Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

‘New Era’ was established to offer help to all those affected by Domestic abuse across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, providing free, confidential support for adult and child victims, perpetrators and their families, as well as businesses, communities and professionals.

Staffordshire Commissioner for Police, Fire & Rescue and Crime, Ben Adams said: Demand for these critical services continues to increase year on year, both in Staffordshire and nationally, as more and more victims are identified and seek support.  It is vital that all victims of domestic abuse and their families are able to access the effective, targeted support they need when they need it, to help them recover from the impact of these crimes.”
