CRY in memory of Dan Hughes – Manchester Marathan
Written by Hitmix Local News on 9 April 2024
This Sunday, two runners are competing in the Manchester Marathan to raise funds for CRY – which is of course Cardiac Risk in the Young in memory of Dan Hughes. We have shared Dan’s story many times but it is one of those stories where everytime you hear it, it doesn’t get any easier – Dan passed away suddenly on the 19th March 2015 – he was just 28 years old. Since then the hughes family, Dave and Sue, Dan’s sister Kim and now his young nieces Frankie and Millie, and many of Dans friends, do all they can to raise funds to get the hearts of young people tested so that no other family has to suffer how they have. And in the time since Dan’s death, they have put many minds at rest and they have also saved a few lives in Dan’s name.
They also get great support from the local community – many people knew Dan because he was the local postman. On Sunday Liam Kelly and also Lucy Benson are running to raise funds for Dan. Liam has raised funds before for the fund completing the London Marathan – however – he says that it is still a big challenge for him and he has to do lots of training but he loves the charity so much its all worth it. Lucy Benson will be running in memory of her mum Sam Benson who passed away of a cardiac arrest aged just 50 years old and Lucy was just 18.
Lucy said about Sam “My mum was a kind, loving and wonderful women who played a vital role in shaping the lives of countless children at Ravensmead Primary School. For years, she dedicated herself to nurturing young minds, and creating a warm and loving environment to all of the children, who were lucky enough to have been taught by her. She was known for her infectious laugh, dedication and left a wonderful mark on the hearts of students, parents and everyone around her.” Lucy is running in Sams name to raise funds for Cry in memory of Dan Hughes.
Ravensmeade School where Sam worked is just up the road in Bignall End and no doubt, Dan Hughes delivered the post there.
I have been told that Lucy has been training for a long time running around Audley, Bignall End, Wood Lane and Alsagers Bank, so we will no doubt have seen her!!
Don’t forget those shocking statistics that keep everyone raising money for this great charity – and that is that Every week in the UK at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions – which is hard to get your head around.
