Investment in Staffordshire Roads, Funding for Wedgwood Institute

Written by on 3 April 2024

An extra £50 million will be invested in maintaining and improving Staffordshire’s highways over the next three years, alongside a total of £53 million being spent on a range of major projects in 24/25.

This extra investment will see 34 road reconstruction schemes planned to be completed between 2024 and 27, plus more than 450 preventative carriageway maintenance schemes, and £2.75 million of work to repair highway drainage.   The county council has also announced that an extra £30 million will be invested in highway maintenance from 2025 to 27.  Key schemes planned for the extra £30 million include the A34 Knutton Lane, and the B5369 Dimsdale Parade West, in Newcastle-Under-Lyme

Work to safeguard one of Stoke-on-Trent’s most iconic heritage buildings is set to start later this year thanks to a £300,000 funding boost.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council successfully applied for the grant from Historic England for much-needed improvements to the Grade II* listed Wedgwood Institute in Burslem.  The funding will help to ensure the Queen Street building, built in 1865 in memory of Josiah Wedgwood, is weather-tight and safe to access.

The works are due to take place from this summer onwards and are expected to be completed by the end of the year.   It’s an exciting time for Burslem as plans to erect a statue of Motorhead frontman Lemmy in Burslem where he was born, have recently been approved.
